Quelle hygiène adopter pour la zone intime ?

What is the best hygiene for the intimate area?

Let's start with the basics: the vagina does not need to be washed. Yes, you read that right. It self-cleans thanks to its vaginal flora, which naturally protects it from bacteria.

Regularly cleaning your vagina or using unsuitable products can lead to an imbalance of the vaginal flora and increase the risk of yeast infections or discomfort.

However, the external area—the vulva—deserves a little attention and a gentle product, adapted to its needs. This is the area that we clean, not the vagina!

What is pH?

The word "pH" may sound technical, but in fact, it's very simple. The potential of Hydrogen is a unit that measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution or environment. It varies between 1 and 14. Below 7, the solution is acidic. Equal to 7, the solution is neutral. Above 7, the solution is alkaline.

  • pH < 7 → acidic
  • pH = 7 → neutral
  • pH > 7 → alkaline

The female genital tract is composed of 2 distinct areas: the internal area (vaginal) which requires no intervention as it self-regulates naturally by maintaining a constantly acidic pH, and the external area (vulvo-anal) whose pH is acidic to slightly alkaline, which is the part that can be cleaned according to individual needs.

Vaginal pH also reflects the state of the vaginal microbiota: a pH above 4.5 indicates an imbalance of the vaginal flora (dysbiosis). This can cause symptoms such as unusual discharge, itching or vulvar pain, and sometimes lead to infections (yeast infection, vaginosis, etc.).

What pH should you choose for the intimate area?

The best option is to choose a product with a physiological pH, respectful of the flora, which will limit irritation and prevent infections.

When we talk about physiological pH, it means that the product has a pH close to that of the area on which it is applied. For the intimate area, it is slightly acidic: a pH between 4.5 and 8.5 for the external area ensures effective cleansing without disrupting the vaginal flora.
